Modern members-only clubs create meaningful connections
By KIRAN GILL
In an era of digital interaction, the resurgence of members-only clubs marks a return to intimate, curated spaces where meaningful interactions are encouraged. These modern-day havens, far from the traditional gentlemen’s clubs of yore, are more than just exclusive enclaves — they are dynamic communities that foster connection and cater to a diverse assortment of interests, industries and lifestyles.
“The resurgence of members-only clubs reflects a deeper societal need for spaces that go beyond the transactional and foster real connection,” said Jennie Enterprise, founder and CEO of CORE.
“In an increasingly digital world, there is a growing desire for in-person, immersive experiences where individuals can cultivate relationships, discover new ideas and engage with original perspectives,” Ms. Enterprise said. “There’s also a renewed sense of the value of discretion and we value our members’ privacy above all.”
Shared values
The modern members-only club emphasizes shared values and curated experiences over social status. Unlike their historical counterparts, which were often defined by rigid hierarchies and homogeneity, today’s clubs strive to unite diverse individuals with common goals or interests.
For example, Soho House, founded in 1995 and an early innovator in the modern members-only space, prioritized individuals with a creative or entrepreneurial bent. As such, Soho House orientated its business model around sophisticated spaces that combined work, leisure and networking.
CORE was founded in 2005 and has grown to include New York, San Francisco and Milan locations. It is a refuge for global citizens with an original perspective and boasts members from over 13 industries.
“We seek out individuals who are citizens of the world who are deeply passionate about culture and community,” Ms. Enterprise said. “Our members are unlike-minded individuals who are relentlessly curious and approach life as a journey of discovery.
“Most importantly, we seek out members who value meaningful community connection and understand that the strength of a community is determined by the active engagement of its members,” she said. “With our diverse and dynamic membership, CORE: is a space where unique synergies thrive as members share their global expertise and original perspectives.”

Shared experiences
Members-only clubs have also evolved to meet the demands of a contemporary audience. Instead of strictly social spaces, many have embraced multi-functional designs that include co-working areas, wellness facilities and even luxury dining experiences.
Annabel’s in London is a prime example of this transformation. Originally established in the 1960s, the club underwent a $100 million renovation to appeal to a new generation. The revamped space boasts multiple dining areas, a garden terrace and bespoke interiors that balance tradition with modern sensibilities.
“Design, location and programming are all critical elements of the CORE: experience,” Ms. Enterprise said. “From a design perspective, we focus on creating spaces that feel both luxurious and like a home away from home — where form meets function in a way that fosters both connection and a sense of freedom, independence and happiness.
“The newly reimagined top four floors at 711 Fifth Avenue, with its iconic terraces featuring sweeping views of Fifth Avenue, creates a dialogue with the city and honors the historical significance of the building,” she said. “I also love that, as with all our designs, we incorporate a beautiful staircase that connects the upper three floors in New York and that really makes you feel as if you’re moving within a private home.”
Other clubs target specific interests or industries. NeueHouse, with locations in Los Angeles and New York, caters to creative professionals by blending cultural programming with co-working spaces. Meanwhile, Chief has redefined the concept of professional networking for women executives, offering spaces designed to foster leadership and connection.
Many clubs also host highly curated events for their membership, from fun learning experiences to discussions with famous faces in industries meaningful to them.
“What truly sets CORE: apart is the ambition and curation of our programming, which includes discussions with highly sought-after thought leaders, private screenings, music performances, travel and art experiences, and exclusive access opportunities where members can engage with headline-makers, leaders and innovators,” Ms. Enterprise said. “Whether it’s a private chef’s tasting in the Culinary Lab or a late-night performance in our speakeasy lounge, every detail of our programming is curated to spark inspiration and community connection.
“The variety of our programming is also unique,” she said. “We’ve taken members to Gloria Steinem’s townhome to experience a talking circle, we’ve hosted Jimmy Fallon and Black Thought to discuss creative collaboration, and we’ve welcomed Rob Gronkowski to talk about his sports legacy and his second act. We really cover it all.”
